Mission Trip to Honduras - February, 2024

Scholarship Application Deadline: October 20, 2023

Jessica Summers, MD

Dr. Jessica Summers was a vibrant, young talented trauma/burn surgeon with many talents and passions. She was extremely passionate about her medical missionary work in Honduras, where she would go each year to provide medical care. In addition to the medical care that she provided, she would also sponsor two children each year through the Honduran Children’s Rescue Fund (HCRF) while on her mission trip. Jessica is remembered for her big smile, caring, compassion, and generosity in Honduras. (Sponsoring a child is not a requirement of the candidate.)

In continuing her legacy, the Jessica Summers, MD, Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established at the Upstate Foundation to sponsor an annual mission trip for a medical professional.

Objective of the Mission Trip

According to the HCRF, “Through the experience of a short-term mission trip, it is hoped that participants will contribute significantly to many of the needs of the Honduran people. The trip will also expand one's view of the Creator, the great need in the world, and the relative unimportance of "things" in our lives. This will be a trip of "reverse mission" where we learn some of life's most important lessons from the poorest of the poor.”

The mission trip to will typically encompass travel to five Honduran villages and see some 1,500 patients, both children and adults, most with medical needs.

Medical professionals are needed in the following fields/specialties:
