Student Research Day 2023

What to Expect After Applying

Here is what you can expect after applying for a graduate program at The College of Graduate Studies at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Viewing Your Application Status

After your application has been submitted, you will have access to your Application Status Page where you can view outstanding checklist items, submit documents, and update your references if needed. You can also update your contact and account information on your status page.

It is important to provide a current email address that is checked frequently, as this is how we will communicate with you throughout the admission process. You may also be required to upload additional materials if required by your intended program of study.

Program Review and Decision

Once your application is complete, our admissions committee begins a comprehensive, holistic review. This is done without regard to sex, sexual orientation, race, color, creed, age, national origin, disability, veteran status, or marital status.

In a holistic review process, we consider the applicant as a whole individual rather than select parts, such as GPA or test scores. In doing so, we evaluate applicants based on who will contribute to the SUNY Upstate Medical University’s academic community in meaningful ways. Holistic review considers factors such as a student’s strength of coursework, research experience, academic and extracurricular interests, background, and personality. By evaluating an application from a holistic perspective, we take the time to get to know applicants as people, not as numbers.

Competitive applicants selected based on the materials in their completed application package are invited to interview faculty members on the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Programs admissions committee. Interviews are conducted in December, January, and February.

Receiving an Admission Offer

If the program extends an offer of admission, you will receive communication from the program and an email from the Admissions Office to view your acceptance letter and respond to your admissions offer. The program communication may include valuable information specific to your application (deadlines, provisions, official transcripts requirements, etc.).

Required Documents Upon Acceptance

Upon acceptance, you will be instructed to have official transcripts sent from all post-secondary institutions attended. You should wait until your degree has been conferred to arrange for the official transcripts / documents to be sent. Deadlines for the receipt of this documentation will be included in your acceptance letter.

International applicants

Upon acceptance, you will have to submit an official comprehensive report (course-by-course with GPA) completed by World Education Services (for institutions outside the U.S. documents may include marksheets, record of courses, degree/study certificate, diploma, transcripts etc.) and official English translation if the language of instruction is not English. You should wait until your degree has been conferred to arrange for the official transcripts/documents to be sent for the evaluation
