Description of Research Project:
The trabecular meshwork (TM) drains the aqueous humor to regulate outflow resistance and intraocular pressure. In primary open-angle glaucoma, the TM undergoes fibrotic-like extracellular matrix (ECM) contraction and stiffening. These biophysical alterations instruct TM cells to adopt a pathological phenotype over time; however, the precise mechanisms underpinning TM cell dysfunction in glaucoma remain elusive. My research project mainly centers around identifying how Human Trabecular Meshwork (HTM) cells acquire and retain information about their accumulated mechanical history, and the extent to which this contributes to the persistence of glaucomatous TM cell pathobiology.

Favorite thing about SUNY Upstate:
The people, the environment. Upstate has the kindest people I have ever seen. I love the infrastructure and also the collaboration between the basic sciences and the clinical departments. If you are interested in translational research, this is the best place to be.

Favorite thing about Syracuse or Central New York:
Just drive about 10 mins and you are out in the middle of nature. Syracuse is a pretty place surrounded by lakes. It's very beautiful, especially during summer and fall. Winters are a bit harsh but it has it's own beauty.

What I do for fun: I love to travel and hike. I love painting too. Currently I am trying to learn to play my ukulele, hopefully can play something super soon!
